How to Make CBD Gummies at Home

CBD Gummies

This recipe for CBD gummies is a little bit of a departure from the recipes I usually post. But a bit of background, as a former elite athlete, I used CBD for pain management and also to help with sleep when I was in a tough training cycle. Opinions about CBD and its effectiveness aside, I’m a firm believer in the placebo effect anyway, this is a fun and easy recipe to make. Plus these gummies have far fewer ingredients than anything you’d find at the store or dispensary.

How to make your own CBD Oil

This recipe requires having oil infused with CBD. The process I use to make CBD oil is easy and straightforward. However, it does take time. Take 15 grams (~1/2 oz) of decarbed CBD flower and combine it with 454 grams (16 oz) of coconut oil. Place the mixture in a mason jar. Set the sous vide to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the water is at the correct temperature, place the mason jar in the bath. Cook for four hours. Remove the jar from the water bath and let cool for a few minutes. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth to remove the CBD flower. Store the infused oil as you would any regular oil.

It’s important to decarb the CBD before placing it in the oil. This step activates the CBD in the flower and makes it easier to be infused into the oil. If you don’t have a sous vide, this recipe can be done on the stove. Simmer the oil and flower mixture for 2.5 hours in a saucepan or double boiler. Keep the temperature of the oil below 200 degrees Fahrenheit at all times.

CBD Gummies Instructions

Now that we have our infused oil, let’s get into the recipe. And honestly, you can also make regular gummies with this recipe. The sour lemon gummies in the photos use regular coconut oil. CBD gummies were a much easier keyword to rank for in search results. Not quite as easy as THC gummies, but I’d like to keep things relatively family-friendly. Plus I don’t want to have one of those “are you 21” pop-ups. Not that I know how to set that up on my site to begin with.

Assemble your ingredients

Grease your gummy molds with cooking spray to help release the gummies once they’ve set. Next measure out the gelatin and citric acid if using. Add the water, oil, and soy lecithin to a saucepan. Over low heat, whisk constantly until the oil and lecithin granules have melted and the mixture is a uniform texture and consistency.

It looks disgusting but it’ll turn out okay.

Continuing to whisk, add the contents of the Jell-O package and the gelatin. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and consistent in texture.

Filling the Molds

Working quickly, transfer the mixture from the saucepan to the molds. This can be done using a dropper or pouring from a measuring cup. Keep in mind that the mixture needs to be whisked to keep the gelatin from setting. For that reason, I prefer pouring the molds using a measuring cup. Once the molds are filled, pop them in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm up the gummies. Remove from the freezer and unmold the gummies and let air dry at room temperature. Store the gummies in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.

Ingredients

  • 105 grams coconut oil infused with CBD (½ cup)
  • 118 ml water (½ cup)
  • ½ tsp soy lecithin
  • 3 oz Package Jell-O
  • 20 grams Unflavored gelatin (2 tbsp)
  • ½ tsp Citric acid (optional, only if you want sour gummies)

Instructions

  • Lay down a sheet of wax or parchment paper on your work surface. Coat the gummy molds with cooking spray to help release the gummies from the mold and set on top of the wax paper.
  • Add the coconut oil, water, and soy lecithin to a sauce pan. Over low heat, whisk constantly until the lecithin granules are dissolved and the mixture is a consistent uniform texture.
  • While continuing to whisk, add the Jell-O package and the unflavored gelatin and citric acid, if using. Whisk over low heat until smooth and uniform in texture.
  • Once mixture is uniform, pour into gummy molds working as quickly as possible. The warmer the mixture, the better it will form in the molds
  • Place molds in the freezer for 30 minutes to help the mixture firm up. After which, pop the gummies out of the molds onto a piece of wax or parchment paper to air dry.
  • Once gummies have finished drying, they can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge in an airtight container.
